GARDEN Route extreme runner Jo McKenzie was one of the heroes of the epic ultra-marathon through the Addo Elephant Park at the weekend, winning the women‘s category and coming in third overall in a field which included top domestic and overseas men and women trail runners. Just for a moment, imagine how difficult it is to run a mile. Now imagine running a mile in 120 degrees. Now imagine running it uphill. Now imagine doing it 135 times in a row without sleeping. Each year, about 90 runners line up to see if they have what it takes to cross 135 miles of Death Valley on foot. “It’s considered the world’s toughest footrace because it’s so far, and so hot and so insane,” said Chris Kostman, the Badwater 135 race director and chief adventure officer. Fancy-dress runners in training are like baby pigeons: you know they exist but you never see them. Then a big race such as the Flora London Marathon arrives and you find yourself lining up at the start next to Batman, a hotdog, Minnie Mouse and a giant banana.
A pair of shorts and a vest might be as fancy as you usually dress, but if you want to push the boat out in a race, fancy dress is a great way to attract attention and boost charity donations. The majority of fruits and veggies are seasonal. Though, many can be eaten during other seasons, or “off” months, your taste buds will thank you for knowing when the “on” months are. Also, because there is an abundance of them while they are in season, it is a general rule that they are also cheaper at those times, depending upon a cost that may be associated with importing them.
