Since 1955, the Western States Trail ride has been conducted yearly, and since 1974, respectively, the Western States Endurance Run has been an annual event.

On Thursday, Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) introduced legislation to authorize a study of the Western States Trail to determine if it qualifies to be labeled as a National Historic and Scenic Trail. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) has cosponsored this bill, which authorizes the inquiry of the historic route that runs through the High Sierra in California, stretching about 100 miles from Squaw Valley to Auburn.

The study will designate whether or not the Western States Trail suits specific historic, ecological and scenic requirements.

“The Western States Trail is a nationally significant resource that highlights California’s natural heritage,” Boxer said.

“This legislation will help ensure that one of the most beautiful areas of California can be enjoyed by runners, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts for generations to come.”

Boxer stated that there was measurable support from the boards of supervisors in Placer and El Dorado counties, and the Auburn City Council for this Western States National Study Act.
