On June 16th, more than 150 adventure racers battled through the challenging San Juan Mountains in the 7th Annual Durango Adventure Xstream Adventure Race. Checkpoint Zero has an event roundup:

Competitors at the Adventure Xstream Adventure Race competed in a 60-mile or 100-mile course testing their skills in trail running, mountain biking and kayaking across challenging and variable terrain.

Additionally, navigating the course amongst numerous checkpoints, completing the 250 foot Tyrolean Traverse and kayaking down the Animas River, challenged team dynamics as well as competitors’ mental and physical strength.

The midnight start at Purgatory Ski Area began with a rush of teams picking up their Trek Section (CP1-CP9) coordinates and then after plotting the course, darting off into the night in numerous directions. The 40+ mile trek took teams between 7 to 10 hours to obtain as many of the 9 CPメs as they could within the given time period.

Team 4 Corners Adventure Racing was the only 4 person co-ed team to reach all checkpoints on the trek. The racers then mountain biked, completed a tyrolean traverse, and paddled 16 miles on the Animas River to the finish line.

Team 4 Corners Adventure Racing (Rick Callies, Emily Baer, Tom Ober, and Brett Sublet) took first place in the Durango Adventure Xstream 24-hour Race winning the 4-person Co-ed category with a winning time of 19 hours and 7 minutes. Second and third place went to Team BagelWorks (20 hours and 33 minutes) and Team Salomon/Crested Butte (23 hours and 11 minutes) respectively.

First place 2-person co-ed team was Team Santa Fe Bear Pair with a winning time of 22 hours and 39 minutes. First place 2 person open team was Red Rock Running Company. First place solo male & female finishers in the Durango 24-hour race were Charlie Nuttleman & Renee Kline. Team Damn It took first place in the 12 hour adventure race 4 person co-ed category.
